Chapter 41

Epitaph of the Highway

Hello it’s been a while,

my heart has been drained of hope.

If you should find this,

send it home for me.

Sun baked skin burns underneath the Carolina sky.

Haven’t been to bed and haven’t a dime to eat on.

Working from morning break to go north,

leaving my love behind.

People drive alone, grieving,

the loss of a son.

Small towns dying,

fathers weeping of a loss of a daughter.

Come take me home,

leaving my love behind.

Tired of seeing the same old breaks,

breathing in new mistakes.

Send me on with a basket of food,

finding a life on the endless road.

Say a prayer for me,

my only friend is the heartbreak rain drops.

Longful wanting to find my home,

my blood is a thunderstorm that will not end.

Diamond dreams in the midnight slumber,

finding strength in the Gods.

Not sure if my eyelids will open,

finding the melody of the soul.

From the bluest desolation to the emerald compassion,

this pen will pass onward.
