Chapter 69 - Page 1 of 4

San Diego, California, March, 2078, Monday…

Once in San Diego Caitlin and Dan enlisted the help of some west coast members of Caitlin's task force. With their help Frank Suarez' trail led to the Pink Camel and the night club led them to Jamie Porter, Suarez' girl friend.

Dan scowled at the entrance to the club. The doorway was set between two wide circular arcs that intersected. It was all painted pink and didn't at all remind him of a camel. The obvious yonic symbol immediately told him something about what really went on in there. He was immediately uncomfortable, especially in Caitlin's company.

"She doesn't work here anymore, but here's her home address," said the bartender after sufficient harassment. "Nice good looking woman." He pointed at Frank's picture that Caitlin had brought. "The boy friend looks like he could kill his mother."

"Maybe he did," said Dan. He put down a bill that covered their drinks and a generous tip. "We'd appreciate it if you didn't broadcast who we are." He slid another bill to the bartender. "A deposit on any more information you might have. You can give me a call at this cell number." He handed the man his card.

"Yes, I can do that. About broadcasting who you are? I think everyone here knows you're cops. Brenda over there thinks you're cute, by the way."

Dan looked Brenda's way and became embarrassed by her near nudity as she wiggled her hips in time with the heavy beats of the music. He wasn't a prude; he was just embarrassed due to Caitlin's presence, her smile, and wink.

"Dan always looks for the breasts," she confided to the bartender. She smiled at Dan. "Maybe you've found your soul mate."

The bartender laughed and Dan's blush deepened.

Jamie Porter's apartment was in a typical southern California complex. There were two rows of buildings, each with a first and second floor, a dingy pool with only one functioning ladder and a broken diving board, gardens and common area in the center, and one carport per tenant in back. Hers was on the second floor, all the way in the front. They knew it to be a simple one-bedroom unit.

Caitlin and Dan had already agreed how to handle this when they had found out where the woman lived. Up to now, they only knew her as Frank's girl friend. Caitlin picked the lock and they were in.

They were in the L-shaped space that corresponded to the eat-in kitchen and living room. On the kitchen table and in the sink were dirty dishes. A doorway at the end presumably led to the bathroom and bedroom.

"That you, Frank?" called a sleepy voice from the bedroom.
